How different Birth Experiences may Impact your Child’s Nervous System

Birth is powerful, emotional, unpredictable, beautiful, overwhelming, and deeply transformative! Birth is a small miracle that comes in many forms and no two experiences are exactly the same. 

While some moms have long labors, some have quick deliveries. While some need to be induced, some end up with emergency C-sections. While we hope every mom has a very positive, as-planned birth experience, many don’t go as planned. Because of this, we want to talk about the various experiences many women have that come to our office.  

This conversation is never about blame. Because we know that there is no one “right” way to give birth and there is a time and place for interventions. This is not about making moms feel like they have done something wrong. Rather, this blog is simply to bring understanding about how a baby’s nervous system, sleep, feeding, regulation can be supported after birth! 

After birth, your baby experiences a massive neurological shift 

When most people think about birth, they think about the physical labor and the 9 months of physical changes leading up to it (for both mom and baby). But birth is also one of the most neurologically significant transitions a human being will ever experience.

For nine months, your baby’s nervous system develops in a warm, consistent, protected environment. Then suddenly, within hours:

  • Pressure changes dramatically

  • Sensory input changes dramatically

  • Movement patterns change

  • Temperature changes

  • Feeding becomes independent

  • Digestion becomes independent

  • Breathing becomes independent

  • Sleep patterns begin developing

  • The nervous system must adapt to an entirely new world

Many babies adapt beautifully to all this change all at once. 

But sometimes, babies show signs that their nervous system is having a harder time processing the change in environment associated with early postpartum life. This does not mean something is “wrong” with your baby. It simply means your baby may need a little extra support. 

Why the Head, Neck & Nervous System Matter 

One of the biggest areas we pay attention to in neurologically-focused pediatric chiropractic care is the upper neck.

The upper cervical spine is incredibly important because it sits near:

  • The brainstem

  • The vagus nerve

  • Important feeding and swallowing reflexes

  • Muscles involved in latching and head turning

  • Pathways involved in digestion and regulation

  • Sensory processing pathways

  • The autonomic nervous system

During labor and delivery, significant pressure and movement occur through the baby’s head and neck. Even in healthy, uncomplicated births, babies experience substantial compressive and rotational forces. Sometimes babys’  nervous system and muscles hold onto tension after birth. Leading to things like:

  • Torticollis

  • Side preference

  • Difficulty latching

  • Clicking while feeding

  • Reflux

  • Colic

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Arching or stiffness

  • Difficulty calming

  • Frequent startling

  • Constipation

  • Sensory sensitivity

  • Difficulty with transitions or regulation as they grow

Again, these symptoms are not automatically caused by birth. But birth experiences can absolutely be one piece of the puzzle.

Vaginal Births

Vaginal birth is an incredible physiological process. The compression and movement through the birth canal are actually designed to help prepare baby for life outside the womb.

During vaginal delivery, babies experience:

  • Rhythmic compression

  • Rotational movement

  • Pressure through the head and neck

  • Stimulation of reflexes

  • Sensory activation

  • Compression that helps clear fluid from the lungs

This process often helps activate and organize the nervous system for the transition into the outside world. But even beautiful vaginal births can still be physically demanding for babies. Certain factors may increase stress load during delivery, including:

  • Long labors

  • Very fast labors

  • Posterior positioning

  • Shoulder dystocia

  • Extended pushing phases

  • Cord complications

  • Large babies

  • Restricted movement in utero

For some babies, these experiences may contribute to tension patterns or difficulty regulating afterward.

Induced Births

Induction is incredibly common today, and many inductions are medically necessary and appropriate. At Connected Kids Chiropractic, we never want moms to feel shame surrounding induction. Sometimes induction is the safest and most loving choice available. At the same time, induced labor can create a different neurological and physical experience for both mom and baby. In spontaneous labor, contractions often build gradually and rhythmically.

With induction, contractions may:

  • Intensify more quickly

  • Last longer

  • Become more frequent sooner

  • Allow less recovery time between contractions

  • Create stronger compressive forces earlier in labor

For some babies, this can increase stress load on the nervous system during delivery. Again, this does not mean induction is harmful. It simply means some babies may need more support adapting afterward. Some babies may present with:

  • Difficulty calming

  • Increased muscle tension

  • Feeding struggles

  • Reflux

  • Colic-like symptoms

  • Torticollis

  • Poor sleep

  • Sensory sensitivity

  • Increased startle reflexes

Many parents feel relieved simply understanding that their baby’s nervous system may still be processing a very intense transition.

Assisted Deliveries (Vacuum & Forceps)

Sometimes vacuum and forceps interventions can absolutely be necessary and lifesaving.

Sadly, these interventions involve direct traction and force through the baby’s head and neck, they can sometimes create additional tension patterns afterward. Many parents do not realize how connected the jaw, neck, cranial muscles, tongue function, and nervous system are in newborns.

Even subtle tension patterns may influence:

  • Feeding coordination

  • Head turning

  • Comfort while lying flat

  • Sleep quality

  • State regulation

  • Digestion

  • Muscle tone

After assisted deliveries, some babies may show:

  • Torticollis

  • Head preference

  • Difficulty latching

  • Jaw tension

  • Increased reflux

  • Difficulty settling

  • Arching or stiffness

  • Sensitivity while feeding

This is one reason many families seek neurological chiropractic care early after birth.


C-Section Births

Some C-sections are planned. Some are completely unexpected. Each bringing their own set of emotions. 

Many C-sections happen because moms and providers are making the safest possible decision for both mom and baby. At the same time, babies born via C-section may experience different neurological and sensory transitions compared to vaginal birth.

Because they bypass the compression of the birth canal, some babies may:

  • Retain more fluid initially

  • Experience different sensory stimulation

  • Have more difficulty clearing pressure patterns

  • Experience increased extraction forces during delivery

  • Miss some of the neurological stimulation associated with vaginal birth

Additionally, during some C-sections, significant traction may occur as baby is guided through the incision. For some babies, this may contribute to:

  • Neck tension

  • Torticollis

  • Difficulty latching

  • Reflux

  • Colic-like symptoms

  • Regulation difficulties

Again, many C-section babies regulate beautifully. This information is not about fear. It is simply about helping families understand why some babies may struggle with tension or regulation after birth.

The Nervous System’s Role in Reflux, Sleep & Regulation

One of the biggest things we educated parents about is that babies communicate through behavior.

When babies are:

  • Arching

  • Fighting sleep

  • Struggling to latch

  • Constantly uncomfortable

  • Preferring one side

  • Difficult to soothe

  • Extremely tense

  • Frequently spitting up

  • Overstimulated easily

…While these are common, it may not be “normal baby behavior.” Sometimes the nervous system is stuck in a stress-dominant state and working harder to adapt. The autonomic nervous system plays a major role in:

  • Digestion

  • Feeding coordination

  • Vagus nerve function

  • Sleep regulation

  • Muscle tone

  • Emotional regulation

  • Sensory processing

  • State transitions

This is why supporting nervous system regulation can impact so many areas of a baby’s function at once.
